    My wife Barbara & I are the third owners, having purchased our boat in 2001 from Norman Turner in San Diego, after he cruising Mexico for a few years.  The original owner was also in San Diego, who used the boat locally.
    Our boat has a deck-stepped mast, head forward configuration.  The boat had many upgrades when I bought her, & I have been spending the last 4 years continuing the process.  The most significant things I’ve done have been to replace the original Pathfinder 50 hp diesel with a new Pathfinder 65 hp diesel, add a Max Prop, put on a new epoxy bottom, new standing rigging & sails, & a beefed up stem fitting.  There has been a lot more I’ve done, but hard to list all of it.  We leave for Mexico & beyond this fall, so I am in the final stages of boat prep between now & then.

    We have owned Tara Dawn since March 1997; previously she was Tara, but we had to add to the name to allow us to register her in New Zealand (duplicate names are not allowed and we didn’t like the idea of a number).
    She was sailed to New Zealand in the early 1990′s by a Robert Patterson who was reputedly in his early 80′s at the time. She was then sold to a New Zealand couple in 1995.
    As you may have guessed from our address, we live aboard and have done so since May 1997. The third member of the crew is Smudge, our 13-year old cat.
    We sailed to Tonga and Fiji in 2003 and have done a lot of round-the-buoys racing here in Auckland – probably one of the few homes that goes racing! And we are not talking Passport 40 racing but normal mixed-fleet club racing.
    We had the osmosis treatment and hull repainted in 1999, new chainplate knees in 2000 (the originals were literally pulling off the hull and were woefully inadequate) and have just had the cabin, decks and mast repainted. This last bit of work started with some rot in the shower basin (Tara Dawn has a forward vee-berth with the heads just forward of the mast) and resulted in my ripping out the entire heads, cabin sole, floors and all. To get to a floor I though was broken (just behind the mast) we had to take the mast out and while the mast was out we thought we might as well get the cabin and deck painted (the gel-coat was dead and badly needed it). Turned out the floor wasn’t broken but the mast step (the mast is keel-stepped) was. So I still have a little bit of work to do to get her into sailing trim. And in my spare time  I work for Navman, which is a New Zealand firm making marine electronics and in-car navigation systems. Janet works for a small charter boat company “”Charterlink”" based at the marina here.

    Apparently her original owner lived in Florida & cruised there as well as the Bahamas.  Her second owner named her Elysium & moved her to NY.  We renamed her Pelican & cruised Long Island Sound to Narragansett Bay for a few years then took her to Florida & back to Annapolis.  We replaced the original Nanni with a Yanmar, which was a welcome improvement.  She has been significantly refitted with new sails, navigation, & electrical systems & is in great condition awaiting her next owner.  Pelican has a forward cabin with portside head & separate shower.

    We have updated many systems (fridge, nav, comms) and upgraded a lot of the running rigging hardware (reefing, clutches, lines and more).  We have kept the name “Pelican” so as not to anger the gods.  Her hailing port is “East Greenbush, NY” and the CG # has remained the same.

    “I’ve experienced no major faults (hope this doesn’t curse me to suffer thru the next 20 years with everything failing).  I’ve replaced some minor stuff that has lasted well beyond the normal life span (like the cold machine and rigging) – but have fortunately not run into a lot of the recently discussed annoying things (like welding cable wiring, quadrant failure, rusting ballast, etc.).  We’ve not done any extensive “”blue water”" cruising, but have been down the California coast from our SF home to the Channel Islands and Catalina many many times – often with return roundings of Pt Conception that most certainly put a strain on everything (including a 40K gale that proved the boat is definitely up to more than we are !!).  Intuitively, I get the feeling that the yard instituted some significant improvements in their mfg technique about the time Drambuoy was put together.”
